Whenever people say that our ability to design stories with the exact voice for their brand is uncanny, or amazing, we always tell them that it’s nothing magical; but a very rational process of mining the right information from the client and using it in our creative process.


The first step of this process is the questionnaire that we share with our clients; it serves as the cornerstone of our story design process. It’s designed to extract key insights about your brand, values, and other ideas that help us capture the authentic story of your company or personal journey. So, this questionnaire is more than just a series of inquiries—it's essentially the series of dots that we will connect into an articulation framework for your business; a blueprint that enables you to make decisions, brief creatives, and communicate what’s at the heart of your business to your staff. In this blog post, we'll address the frequently asked questions surrounding our questionnaire, offering clarity on how your responses can be formulated to best inform our story design process.

Question 4 

In question 4, we ask about any specific needs, problems, or wants that must be taken into account in our design process; usually, the answer to this question would be a set of words, colours, or ideas that you want to steer clear of for important reasons; or a market context that you want to make special reference to. For example, a consultant who commissioned us wanted to steer clear of the word ‘design’ because it had a strong association with a set of services she did not offer and did not want to get inquiries for.



Question 5 

Question 5 is to get you to consider how the articulation framework will be used. If your primary focus is on driving creative decisions when speaking to consumers, you should emphasize how the framework will inform your marketing and promotional strategies. 

On the other hand, if your priority is to share your work culture, values, and onboard new teams or inform existing teams, focus on how the framework will serve as a foundational tool for internal communication and alignment. Then the framework will be somewhat tailored to help you integrate it into onboarding processes, employee training programs, and internal communications to foster a sense of belonging and unity among team members.


Question 6

When answering question 6, whether your business takes a group-led or individual-led approach in your business story, consider if your business is best represented by the collective efforts of a group or by an individual founder or leader who closely directs others and makes most of the key decisions. Determine which approach resonates most authentically with your way of working.


Question 7 

In question 7, we ask you to associate a fictitious age with your brand persona; and this has nothing to do with how long your business has been in operation. Here’s why. A brand’s age has to do with shaping how it’s perceived by your target market. Although hardly ever explicitly mentioned in stories, a brand’s age can be hinted at in its visual presence or vocabulary.


Consider how these age groups are generally perceived. Envisioning your brand as young can convey a sense of freshness, innovation, and forward-thinking. This youthful persona may appeal to younger demographics seeking products or services that are modern, cutting-edge, and disruptive. On the other hand, positioning your brand as middle-aged suggests a level of maturity, reliability, and experience. This persona may resonate with consumers who value stability, trustworthiness, and a track record of success. Portraying your brand as a senior evokes notions of tradition, heritage, and legacy. This venerable persona can instil confidence and trust in consumers who prioritize longevity, heritage and established credibility. Lastly, embracing an ageless persona transcends temporal boundaries and emphasizes timeless values and universal appeal. This approach resonates with consumers seeking products or services that are enduring, adaptable, and relevant across generations.


When answering the question of how old your brand considers itself to be, it's crucial to align the fictitious age with the desired perception you wish to convey to your target market. Consider the demographics, values, preferences, and aspirations of your audience, and choose an age that best reflects the identity and positioning you want for your brand. 


Question 8 

When considering the gender of your brand persona, it's important to recognize the impact this decision can have on shaping the perception of your brand and its appeal. Associating a gender with your brand persona can serve as a powerful tool for conveying specific traits, values, and characteristics that resonate with your intended audience.


For instance, envisioning your brand persona as feminine can evoke qualities such as nurturing, empathy, and creativity. This persona may appeal to consumers who prioritize emotional connections, authenticity, and inclusivity in their interactions with brands. Positioning your brand persona as masculine suggests attributes such as strength, leadership, and assertiveness. This persona may resonate with consumers who value qualities like reliability, confidence, and ambition in the brands they choose to engage with. Alternatively, embracing a non-binary persona challenges traditional gender norms and fosters a sense of fluidity, diversity, and acceptance. This persona can appeal to consumers who prioritize equality, openness, and representation in their brand interactions.


It's important to note that when considering whether a brand persona is feminine, masculine, or non-binary, we're not necessarily referring to traditional notions of male, female, or LGBTQ identities. Instead, we're associating these terms with energies, traits, and tendencies that can transcend gender boundaries and apply to individuals of all genders.


By understanding these distinctions, brands can leverage the concepts of feminine, masculine, and non-binary energies to communicate specific values, characteristics, and emotions that resonate with their target audience, regardless of their gender identity. This approach fosters a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of brand personas, allowing for greater flexibility and authenticity in brand representation.


Question 13

When answering the question about what your brand sounds like when speaking, reflect on the preferences and characteristics of your ideal target audience. Determine whether they are more responsive to communications that sound local and familiar or if they prefer a more global and cosmopolitan tone. Understanding your audience's cultural context and linguistic preferences is crucial in shaping your brand's voice. Consider your business’ origins and how important that is to your story. Evaluate whether your brand's voice should reflect the speech and language of a particular region or culture. Consider whether aligning with regional dialects, colloquialisms, and cultural nuances will enhance your brand's authenticity. Is your business rooted in a specific community or culture? 

Or does it have a more cosmopolitan and globally-minded perspective? Assess the potential impact of adopting a more universal and culturally neutral tone on your brand's global appeal.


This tone of voice must be managed consistently whether it’s in advertising campaigns, social media posts, customer service interactions, or written content. Maintaining a cohesive and unified voice across channels is a must.


Question 28

This question prompts you to think about the type of consumer with their purchasing decision-making methods. When creating stories and visual language, a brand must pay close attention to the type of consumer they are targeting because different types have unique behaviours, preferences, and motivations that shape their purchasing decisions.


For instance, the Bargain Shopper is primarily driven by discounts and deals, seeking value for their money. In brand stories and visual language, emphasizing cost savings, special offers, and price competitiveness can effectively resonate with this audience segment.


The Researcher, on the other hand, values information and seeks thorough research before making a purchase. Providing detailed product information, customer reviews, and comparisons in brand stories and visual content can help build trust and credibility with this audience.


For the Impulse Buyer, who makes spontaneous purchasing decisions, leveraging eye-catching visuals, limited-time offers, and persuasive storytelling can create a sense of urgency and drive immediate action.


The Negotiator appreciates flexibility and seeks opportunities for customization or personalized offers. Tailoring brand stories and visual language to highlight customizable options, flexible payment terms, and personalized recommendations can appeal to this audience segment.


The Loyalist values brand trust, consistency, and reliability. Reinforcing brand identity, values, and past experiences through consistent brand stories and visual elements can foster loyalty and strengthen the emotional connection with this audience.


Lastly, the consumer on a mission seeks efficiency and convenience, with a singular objective of completing the purchase quickly. Streamlining the buying process, providing clear navigation paths, and minimizing distractions in brand stories and visual language can cater to this audience's need for speed and simplicity.


Understanding the nuances of each consumer type allows us to tailor their brand stories and visual language effectively, resonating with their target audience's preferences, behaviours, and motivations. Consider this when you’re answering this question.



Question 34

This is one of the questions often elaborated by our clients; however, the point here is to be as succinct as possible, narrowing down on what exactly it is that you do. This question is to identify how to refer to your work or business. For example, ‘a clothing store’, or a ‘financial intelligence consultant’. Of course, there is room to bring in a specialized aspect of your business here; for example, an ‘abstract painting artist’. When a business identifies what it does, it helps customers understand its purpose, offer, and what to expect. This is important for brand stories and visual language; this clear identification should be reflected in messaging, visuals, and branding elements to ensure consistency and coherence.


For example, if the brand is a digital marketing agency, it should clearly convey its services, such as "digital marketing solutions," "online advertising," or "social media management”. 


This is a question that requires a somewhat short answer, which is why we encourage clients to try and explain their work as succinctly as possible, in approximately 3 words.

The defining superpower of the Creator is to absorb the world and reproduce it new, resolved and made more interesting inside their mind. We have all the art, music, science, books, films and objects thanks to Creators who decided to remake a morsel of this world, in defiance of its mortality and inevitable end. It’s the first and foremost archetype of Public Works’ persona and many of our clients who embrace creativity as a core aspect of their business. To those with a dominant Creator archetype, the room to create and follow their muse is everything. Thinking outside the box, new ideas and perpetual freshness are natural to the Creator's mind. The Creator is associated with innovation, imagination, and the power to bring new ideas into existence. It’s an archetype that taps into the human capacity to transform thoughts into tangible creations, emphasizing the process of making something new and meaningful. Businesses embodying this archetype often exhibit a strong sense of originality, creativity, and a drive to manifest their visions, whether they are in the creative sector, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, technology, retail or scientific invention.


When you’re a Creator, you’re in constant rebellion against death and disorder; because creativity is the neverending persistence in making a case for life and harmony despite the fundamentality of decay and chaos. When you’re a Creator, your mind becomes the antidote to the darkness; because creativity is the spark that shines against emptiness. Creativity is the light and the Creator is its holder.


The Creator is one of the twelve archetypes of the universally recognized patterns of the human psyche as theorized by Carl Jung— the Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology. We use them in our story design process. Businesses channeling the Creator


Businesses embodying the Jungian archetype of the Creator embrace innovation, originality, and a commitment to bringing fresh ideas to fruition. Whatever their sector or industry is, Creator businesses are usually pioneers in it, pushing boundaries to set new standards and bringing forth completely new ways of doing things. On the flip side, the obsessive side of the Creator archetype may make them prone to perfectionism, potentially hindering timely project completion. Striking a balance between creativity and practicality becomes crucial for these businesses, allowing them to harness their inventive spirit while managing the challenges associated with the relentless pursuit of perfection typical to the Creator.


Among our clients, businesses in design, technology, fashion, culinary arts and architecture naturally align with the Creator archetype, fostering innovation and originality, consistently pushing the boundaries of what's possible, whether it’s in products, devices, clothing, wearable tech, software, visuals, food, spaces, or structures. Story-based creative studios like us at Public Works, television production studios, authors, AI visual artists, gaming companies and filmmakers also naturally lean into the Creator, demonstrating this archetype’s ability to craft compelling and imaginative stories that transport audiences. Businesses in experiential design for virtual and augmented reality also channel the same aspect of the Creator archetype through more immersive experiences. Across all industries, the culture of startups and entrepreneurship embodies the Creator's spirit by introducing new solutions to existing problems and the tendency to ruthlessly experiment.


With ‘innovation’ being the business buzzword of the last two decades, many businesses like the idea of aligning their brand persona with the Creator. But, it’s a trait that has to be central to your core values to bring in the Creator archetype to your brand persona. We use a Brand Articulation Framework to identify a business persona, where archetypes are one of the major tools we use. In our own business, the Creator is the first and foremost archetype; see the Public Works brand articulation framework that unpacks how this archetype channels the way our business is centred on creating stories. True to the surprising nature of how the Creator archetype manifests, we’ve observed it in many businesses that you wouldn’t necessarily classify as ‘creative’ by their sector alone.

Unlikely or businesses lesser-known to channel the Creator archetype include sustainable and eco-friendly companies, where unusual solutions are needed to address environmental challenges. Renewable energy companies also demonstrate the Creator's commitment to innovative solutions for a sustainable future. They reflect the Creator's core desire to contribute to the world. Similarly, we’ve seen urban farming and agriculture companies combine creativity and technology to address food production challenges, channelling the Creator. We’ve also observed Educational Technology (EdTech) platforms that bring a creative approach to education, aligning with the Creator archetype. Another unlikely group of businesses channelling the Creator is in wellness and mindfulness industries; businesses from apps to retreats that employ novel approaches for mental and physical well-being embody the Creator in unexpected ways, aligning with the archetype's imaginative pursuits to infuse creativity into mindfulness practices and well-being. Psychedelic medicine is another subgroup in the healthcare sector that we’ve observed to align with the Creator archetype by exploring groundbreaking treatments.

Creator stories


The Creator archetype calls for distinct story arcs that highlight the drive, inspiration, achievements and even the struggles of an active imagination. Having so many clients with a dominant Creator archetype and our own business being led with a Creator archetype, these are some of the stories we’ve observed, designed and published in celebration of the creative act. Eureka stories, that catch that Aha moment when sudden realization or insight strikes, are great for the Creator archetype. These stories propel the Creator forward and connect audiences to the breakthroughs that set off their journey.


Stories where a Creator sets out to find their muse or surrounds themselves with what inspires them are natural fits. For example, see this story we made for our monthly story subscription about a Creator rediscovering his muse in a new country, and another story designed for a client business to reveal the inspiration behind the new restaurant menu to their audience. We curated this series of visual stories to celebrate what inspires two Creator clients in restaurant and café businesses; their mutual inspirations—from mythology, local culture, plant life, and natural landscapes in Sri Lanka—were brought into their shared space as framed postcards also purchasable at the venue.


Stories about collaboration also make great Creator content because they open room to speak about combining different talents and specialities, production methods and perspectives to enhance the overall creative output. As a Creator business, we often collaborate with other businesses to design stories. This is a logo we created to visually represent the ignition of new possibilities when we work with another business; we use it with our collaborator's business name whenever we release a story as a joint venture. We also recommend stories about getting guidance from a mentor figure who helps shape a creative vision and get through the challenges of the creative process; it’s a great way to link stories to creative authorities and leading professionals in the business; this tribute story about one of our greatest creative mentors is an example.


One of the story types we particularly encourage clients with Creator archetypes to share are those connecting to contribution and impact. The core desire of the Creator archetype is to contribute to the world around them; ideas like conscious creativity and responsible creation all connect to this core desire and channeling it with integrity and a sense of responsibility. After all, creativity is an incredible power to hold, and the consequences of not wielding it responsibly are obvious in all the terrible ideas and inventions big and small, from single-use plastics to the atomic bomb.



When a business uses its creative power to do good—support communities, contribute meaning, harmony, ease, enjoyment, sustainability, beauty or well-being to the world—through its products and services, it’s worth celebrating with stories. For clients with a dominant Creator archetype, we encourage stories like this, that demonstrate the impact of their work and those showing the thoughtful creation or sourcing patterns.


Creativity is a lifelong practice, a way of seeing the world and choosing to surround yourself with inspiration. This is why most Creator businesses wear their creative capacity like a badge of honour. For one of our long-term clients with a dominant Creator archetype with several sub-brands in education, we used this aspect of taking pride in creativity into consideration. One of the rare archetypes whose dark side can be integrated into business stories


Like all other archetypes, the Creator has a dark side; but unlike most archetypes, the Creator’s shadow aspect had been easily accepted, popularized, and even celebrated. The shadow of the Creator is obsessive, struggles with self-criticism and questions their abilities. Refusing to accept creative blocks, failure, and stagnation as temporary setbacks are also traits of the shadow Creator. But, through pop culture, depictions of artists struggling with criticism, visionaries with obsessive perfectionism and the start-up reverence for failure as the ultimate springboard to success, the portrayal of the shadow Creator has been normalized and even romanticized.


In appropriate situations, we’ve recommended to Creator archetype clients to use this to their advantage and encouraged revealing genuine aspects of their shadow personas in stories. Why? Because shadow aspects of a persona add more dimension and depth; it makes a business or brand more relatable, approachable and deeply human to speak honestly about their doubts, failures and lessons learnt. It was 2012, and the world still hadn’t collapsed, and Diyabubula had not yet become a resort. It was simply the house of the master creator, Laki Senanayake. No furniture, no walls—no standard way to live, no boundaries fearing the wild… It was simply Laki. Birds flew in to eat the treats Laki kept on his balcony lounge; the monkeys were only shooed away if they got too close to Laki's computer. The way nature flew in and out of Laki’s unwalled house, making it thick with experiences, reminded us how life flits in and out of the creator’s open mind, making it a fertile bed for creative harvest.


It was the first time he met us, but our presence didn’t even stir a molecule out of Laki’s true self. He sat on the balcony with us, bare-chested, in a pyjama sarong, chatting; just as he would with a wild bird using a whistle that perfectly matched its call. Laki had a way with whistling. He whistled to himself—old Sinhala songs and impromptu tunes—he whistled in response to birds, to call someone over; sometimes he seemed to whistle for the jungle, at the sky, for life, for no reason in particular… 


Wild tortoise came by to eat leftover pieces of vegetables from his kitchen; the freshwater fish in the pond were fed from minute scraps left behind; nothing was wasted, everything had its place in the mind of the creator.


‘What kind of music do you listen to?’ was one of the first things he asked us. Although we didn’t realize it at the time, for Laki, music was a road to meet someone in a personal sanctuary—where they were bare, free and themselves. Laki himself used music as a vehicle to transport himself to other worlds. 


After quietly watching a red sun fall into the black jungle in a spectacular descent, Laki politely said that it was time to listen to his ‘weird music’. It was a ritual time to return to that inner place where all artists feel compelled to retreat. One by one, lamps lit Laki’s jungle in fleeting glimpses of his sculptures, moving leaf and water. As hypnotically bizarre music echoed from speakers scattering the wild, theatrics fed from nature, sound and our imaginations unravelled. His music was a curious mix that reminded us of sound poetry and Dadaist meditations; it transformed everything—living and nonliving— into animated extensions of the jungle. Bathed in that furiously wild music and cinematically placed lights, his metal sculptures seemed to flick, bob and twitch from the corners of our eyes. Even Laki’s pond fish came out to gracefully circle the surface in time with the music or our fancy—we can never be sure. For hours no one spoke.


We realized that we just got a rare entry into the secret place where Laki’s genius was let loose to run free. We’re not sure when he returned from that strange place at all that night. He simply seemed to fade into it, leaving the world behind.



Long after we left Laki in his jungle, the lesson he gave us remains. This lesson on what it means to live a creative life—like all lessons given by great masters—was not taught in words or actions. It was something that penetrated us from his being. From Laki, we learnt that creativity is a wild bird. You may analyze its habitat, build charts about its behaviour, and write books about its biology; but to know the wild bird, you must simply visit the jungle. You have to return to the wilderness again and again; and, to have it come perch on your shoulder, you must become as wild and as unlearned as the jungle. Laki taught us that creativity is the most natural thing that there is. It’s the way of the world that recycles life and death; it’s the way of the jungle that’s far stranger than fiction. Yes, creativity is a wild bird. It permanently altered our very perceptions about what it means to inhabit this world as creators.


This is why when we think of what it means to live a creative life,  we like to remember Laki on his balcony, whistling with a bird. He knew that creativity was not a secret, but simply naked nature—wild, practical, genius.
