Heppuwas were used to store betel leaves and are a beautiful product of Sri Lanka's longstanding betel chewing culture. Even today, they are used as display and serving trays. This particular heppuwa with an unusual central lotus motif is from the island's most skilled brass-makers' village of medieval times—Pilimathalawa.
